PPNZ believes New Zealand must remain safe, fair and secure. Our policy focuses on public safety, stronger accountability, victim protection and practical solutions to reduce crime.

Public Safety

New Zealand should maintain its reputation as one of the safest countries in the world. PPNZ raises important issues that have been ignored and promotes practical policies to control crime, protect communities and restore public confidence.

Restore the balance between offender rights and victim protection in sentencing and justice processes.

🔍

Root Cause Solutions

Analyse the causes of crime and apply practical solutions that support long-term change.

Key Policy Actions

Increase sentences for criminals who use children to commit crimes.
Use electronic monitoring of criminals regardless of age where appropriate.
Fast-track youth courts for quicker and more effective outcomes.
Adults and older ring leaders involved in youth crime should receive jail terms.
Review Section 27 of the Sentencing Act 2002 and restore balance between perpetrator and victim.
Remove name restriction for criminals and reduce the ease of name suppression.
Increase police powers to act before a crime is committed in some instances.
Train and recruit more police officers.

Ram Raid and Youth Crime

Issues

Ram raids and burglaries are damaging New Zealand’s image, making communities feel unsafe, and causing many businesses to close or consider leaving. Public places and religious places must be protected.

Solutions

PPNZ supports tougher sentences, skill development options, secure centres for young offenders, stronger accountability, monitoring for repeat offenders and compensation for affected victims and businesses.

Domestic Violence and Public Safety

Analyse and identify the causes of domestic violence.
Develop practical solutions based on what has worked in the past.
Make anger management courses compulsory for offenders where appropriate.
Increase penalties for domestic violence and restraining order breaches.
Create more pathways for people to leave dangerous domestic environments.
Build more safe houses for victims of domestic violence.
Provide greater funding for organisations such as Women’s Refuge and Victim Support.
Establish a 24-hour phone reporting line for sexual harassment and sexual violence reporting.

Police Power and Accountability

Firm but Fair

PPNZ supports an independent review of “soft on crime” criticism and a firm but fair policy that gives police the tools and support needed to protect communities.

More Police, Better Tools

Review the adequacy of police weapons and powers, increase police recruitment and ensure police can act effectively before crime escalates where legally appropriate.

Analyse, Identify and Solve

PPNZ believes crime solutions must address the full range of causes. Solutions should include discipline, treatment, training, mental health support, addiction treatment, poverty-related support, and practical rehabilitation pathways.
