Support for young vulnerable people

Protecting Young Vulnerable People

Young vulnerable people need strong protection systems, safe care environments and properly funded community support. PPNZ supports practical reforms that place safety, accountability and wellbeing at the centre of every organisation responsible for young people.

100% Safety Culture

Introduce a strong safety culture across organisations responsible for protecting vulnerable young people.

Accountable Care Systems

Ensure agencies and service providers are accountable, transparent and focused on the wellbeing of every child and young person.

Support Community Organisations

Increase support for organisations working directly with young people, families and vulnerable communities.

Policy Actions

  1. Introduce a 100% safety culture system into organisations responsible for looking after young vulnerable people.
  2. Strengthen safety, accountability and reporting systems within agencies such as Oranga Tamariki and other child-focused services.
  3. Increase funding to trusted organisations that support young people, including groups such as the Salvation Army, City Missions and other community providers.
  4. Ensure vulnerable young people receive practical support, including safe housing, counselling, education pathways, mentoring and family support where appropriate.
  5. Improve cooperation between government agencies, schools, health services, police, charities and local community organisations.
  6. Make sure funding is directed toward frontline services that deliver measurable support and real protection.

Safety Must Come First

A caring society is judged by how it protects its most vulnerable young people. PPNZ believes safety, dignity, early intervention and proper community support must be central to every policy affecting vulnerable children and youth.
