Disability & Accessibility Policy
Protect & Prosper New Zealand believes every person should be able to move safely, access public spaces and participate in community life with dignity and independence.
Accessible Roads, Footpaths and Public Spaces
Accessibility is not a luxury. It is a basic requirement for a fair society. People who are disabled, elderly, recovering from illness or surgery, visually impaired, intellectually disabled, in rehabilitation, or caring for young children must be able to access roads, footpaths, public spaces and drop-off areas safely.
Safe Footpath Access
Footpaths should be designed and maintained so people with mobility challenges, prams, wheelchairs and walking aids can move safely.
Practical Drop-Off Areas
Roads and public places should include safe drop-off options for people who cannot walk long distances or need assistance.
Inclusive Planning
Council planning and infrastructure design should consider disabled people, elderly residents, young children and people recovering from health conditions.
Policy Actions
- Ensure that people who are health-compromised, age-compromised or disabled can safely access roads, footpaths and public places.
- Require councils and transport planners to consider accessibility before removing parking, changing road layouts or redesigning public spaces.
- Protect safe drop-off and pick-up access for people who cannot walk long distances or need assistance.
- Improve access for people with intellectual disabilities, vision impairment, mobility issues and rehabilitation needs.
- Ensure elderly residents, very young children, people recovering from surgery and people in rehabilitation are considered in public infrastructure decisions.
- Promote practical accessibility audits of footpaths, crossings, public transport areas, medical centres, shopping areas and community facilities.
- Support infrastructure decisions that make daily life easier, safer and more dignified for vulnerable and disabled people.
Accessibility Means Independence
When roads, footpaths and public spaces are not accessible, many people lose their independence. PPNZ supports practical planning that helps people go places, be dropped off safely, access services and remain connected with their communities.
