Policy Actions

  1. Scrap the “Greatest Enforceable Risk” policy for road safety decision-making.
  2. Undertake a Royal Commission of Inquiry into crash reporting and crash causes, including CAS and TCR systems.
  3. Establish an independent crash-cause research organisation.
  4. Create a new Road Safety Education organisation with display centres in major cities.
  5. Introduce dedicated road safety officers under a stand-alone organisation.
  6. Introduce specific drowsy driving legislation for drivers who drive while dangerously tired.
  7. Require drivers aged 80 and over to re-sit both theory and practical licence tests.
  8. Require all drivers to re-sit their theory licence test every 20 years.
  9. Increase cell phone use penalties while driving to $1,000 plus demerit points.
  10. Run national “Put it down” campaigns on distraction and inattention.
  11. Run national education campaigns on driver fatigue, micro-sleeps and power-napping.
  12. Introduce roadside saliva drug testing using proven overseas technology.
  13. Publish detailed fatal crash causes bi-monthly for public awareness.
