Transport Policy

Transport is the backbone of the country and a major driving force behind a strong economy. PPNZ supports affordable, reliable and well-managed transport networks for all New Zealanders.

Transport Policy

Our Transport Priorities

New Zealand needs transport planning based on responsibility, accountability, transparency and international best practice. Our policy focuses on roads, buses, trains, air travel, fuel costs and better regional connectivity.

🛣️

Better Roads

Improve road-building quality, review processes, and prioritise main highways including State Highway 1.

✈️

Affordable Air Travel

Establish affordable domestic air travel and review public money used in airline subsidies.

🚍

Suburb Connectivity

Improved bus and train connections between major suburbs, cities and employment areas.

Fuel Cost Relief

Review taxes on fuels to help reduce the cost of petrol and diesel for families and businesses.

👷

Driver Workforce

Solve bus driver issues by negotiating fair pay and improving working conditions.

🚆

National Rail Network

Reinstate and strengthen the national rail network to reduce pressure on roads and heavy vehicle costs.

Present Issues

Billions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted on roading projects due to poor vision, planning and project management.
Domestic air travel has become too expensive for many New Zealanders.
Many major suburbs lack proper connectivity with buses and trains.
Driver shortages and workforce issues are affecting transport services.
Fuel costs are placing pressure on households, workers and businesses.

Proposed Solutions

Locate quality road-building materials, including bitumen, for better roads.
Review road-building processes and quality control for road construction.
Establish affordable domestic air travel for the public.
Conduct an independent inquiry into why Air New Zealand failed to deliver reasonable airfares after receiving public support.
Restructure Air New Zealand management to ensure public money helps deliver reasonable airfares for New Zealanders.
Review fuel taxes to reduce petrol and diesel costs.
Restructure Waka Kotahi so responsibility, accountability and transparency are clear to the public.
Improve city and suburb connectivity through better bus, train and ferry services.
Review local government transport policies and restructure bus and train management where required.
Hold bus and train service management fully accountable, responsible and transparent.
Prioritise future transport options including electric cars, biofuel cars and other clean technologies.
Introduce an annual bike registration fee to help cover maintenance of cycleways, line markings and street signs.
Reinstate the national rail network to reduce heavy vehicle load and associated road costs.
Rebuild State Highway 1 and other main highways as a priority.

Better Transport Outcomes

Reliable Local Connections

Many major cities face poor connectivity between suburbs. Better local bus, train and ferry planning can help students, workers, youth and job seekers access opportunities without being blocked by transport problems.

Accountable Use of Public Money

PPNZ believes transport funding must be managed responsibly. Public money should deliver real value, better services, fairer fares and improved infrastructure for New Zealanders.

Our Transport Values

AffordableLower pressure on families and businesses.
ReliableServices people can trust and use daily.
